Sponge Bomb Wrecking Ball – Awesome Summer Fun: DAD+DIY

Summer is here! That means it’s time to dust off the old Slip n’ Slide and find the dishwashing liquid. But if you want to be an extra cool parent, then these trendy homemade Sponge Water Bombs are all the rage right now (click here to check out how to make them).

Hold on… these sponge bombs are all cute, kitchen-y and tiny.

NOT DAD ENOUGH!

It’s time to give this DIY water-fun activity a serious DAD UP makeover. Get ready for backyard shenanigans with the all new, all awesome, possibly-concussion-causing SPONGE BOMB WRECKING BALL of Doom (oom, oom, oom, oom)!

Here’s what you need:

  • 9 x lengths of foam (100cm x 10cm x 10cm)
  • plastic string or thin rope
  • hose
  • clothes line or solid tree branch

We’re going to steal shamelessly from the water bomb recipe but make it much, much, much more difficult. First off I’m replacing the teeny weeny kitchen sponges with big foam bars.

Man Hint – track down your local rubber or pool supplies store and ask for their foam off cuts. These should only be a few dollars each.

I failed epically on my first attempt. Do not try to cut the foam yourself. Hacking, tearing and shredding is easy. It turns out that cutting foam is rather tricky. So do yourself a favour and sweet-talk the shop keeper into slicing the foam to the right measurements using their custom buzz saw (my extra huge thanks goes out to Rob from Clark Rubber).

When you get home, pile your nine (9) lengths of foam into three (3) piles of three (3). Each end should look like a square.

Here’s the hard bit. We’ve got to compress these. A lot.

Wrap some strong string or rope around the middle and then pull. Hard. Harder. I said harder.

Try my technique and bear-hug the foam into submission whilst your sexy young assistant (aka, Phenom-A-Mum) ties off the string.

If you put enough gusto into it, you should now have a giant Sponge Water Bomb.

But we’re not done yet. Grab an arm length of rope and hang the massive foam ball from a tree branch or the old Hills Hoist. Then grab the hose and give it a good drenching. And the kids while you’re at it. And the Missus, if you feel you’ve had enough monkey love for the year.

It was a blast to make and our friend (also named Kez!) enjoyed hitting me with the wrecking ball more than was, perhaps, sane. Summer awesomeness!

It seems you’ve gone all Gladiators/It’s a Knockout on us Dave… looks like a lot of fun. Kudos for taking a simple craft activity and dadding it up. Impressive stuff!

I miss ‘It’s A Knockout’! What a great show that was. If only I could have sourced one of those giant costumes to wear while I was being hit:
